What Is Curved Glass?
Curved glass is standard flat float glass that has been heat-bent into a permanent curved shape. Unlike acrylic or laminated films, the curve is baked into the substrate itself — there is no springback, no visible seams, and the optical quality of the finished panel is virtually identical to flat glass. That combination of transparency and geometry is what makes curved glass so useful for architects working on landmark projects in Dubai.
Curved glass comes in two main structural formats: single-toughened (safety) glass and laminated glass with a PVB or SGP interlayer. For facades and skylights, panels can be assembled into curved insulated glass units — two curved leaves separated by a spacer bar and argon fill — to hit the thermal performance required by Dubai Municipality and Estidama regulations.

How Curved Glass Is Fabricated
The fabrication process starts with cutting a flat sheet of float glass to the required developed length and width — the flat blank is always larger than the finished chord dimension. The blank is edge-worked, washed, and placed onto a steel bending mould that has been machined to the exact radius.
The mould and glass are then loaded into a bending furnace. The furnace ramps up to around 580–620°C, at which point the glass softens and slumps under gravity onto the mould. For toughened curved glass, the panel is then rapidly quenched with high-pressure air, locking in surface compression. For annealed curved glass the panel is cooled slowly, and lamination or IGU assembly happens as a secondary process.
Tolerances matter. A well-controlled bending line will hold radius to within ±2mm and edge alignment to ±1mm — critical for facades where curved panels must line through with flat neighbours. Cheaper suppliers with worn moulds produce panels that twist or dish, causing visible reflections and installation gaps.
Curved Glass Cost Factors in Dubai
Four variables dominate curved glass pricing: the mould, the radius, the glass build-up and the panel size. The mould is a fixed tooling cost — a bespoke steel bending form costs AED 8,000–25,000 depending on the size and geometry, and that cost is amortised over the number of panels produced from it. Ten identical curved panels cost far less per panel than one.
Tighter radii cost more because they require slower bending cycles and specialist moulds. Laminated and double-glazed curved units cost more than single-toughened because each leaf has to be bent to matching radii and then assembled without introducing stress. Low-iron (ultra-clear) curved glass adds roughly 25–35% over standard clear float.
As a rough guide for budgeting: 8–10mm toughened curved glass starts around AED 900–1,400 per sqm; 12mm laminated curved glass runs AED 1,600–2,400 per sqm; curved IGUs for facades typically land AED 2,200–3,200 per sqm supplied.
